Wireless Smart eBus Infrastructure (WISE) Project

The Municipality of Strovolos is proud to participate in the WISE (Wireless Smart eBus Infrastructure) project - a strategic partnership between the University of Cyprus, Cyprus Public Transport Group, and SVMENERGY NET LTD - aiming to develop an innovative platform and pilot station for solar-powered wireless charging of electric buses, integrating photovoltaic technology and energy storage.
The project aspires to deliver sustainable, efficient, and data-driven urban mobility solutions, promoting green energy and smart city transformation in Nicosia and beyond.
Coordinated by the University of Cyprus, the project is funded under the “Co-Develop” Programme of the Research and Innovation Foundation, co-financed by the Republic of Cyprus and the European Union’s Cohesion Policy Programme “THALIA 2021–2027.”
Through this initiative, Strovolos takes another step towards becoming the island’s first fully integrated smart and sustainable city, contributing to the EU’s decarbonization goals and to the Cyprus National Energy and Climate Plan.
The Municipality of Strovolos remains committed to promoting innovation, clean technologies, and digital transformation, paving the way for a smarter and greener future for its citizens.
First Results from Cyprus’ Competitive Electricity Market

The 1st of October marked the official opening of the Competitive Electricity Market (CEM) in Cyprus.
From the very first days, the results of the Day-Ahead Market Clearing Prices (MCP) show how the market reflects the true cost of power network operation.
More specifically, on Day 1, the MCP dropped to zero for several hours, matching the photovoltaic generation curve, providing a clear sign of how low volumes of bids can drive down the MCP. On the contrary, on Day 2, as expected, the pay-as-cleared mechanism drove up the MCP due to high volumes of bids that enabled fuel-based generation in the merit order. It should be noted that the must-run unit commitments remained at similar levels for both days.
These first results highlight that the competitive market mechanism is functioning as intended, ensuring transparency, competition, and prices aligned with operational realities.
